Perseverance is a necessary trait when pursuing success. Meet Jacob Fleming, a dedicated LaAmistad volunteer that has been a key figure in cultivating new volunteers since 2019. Every Wednesday, Jacob would make sure he was always joined by a new volunteer. Attending Pace Academy allowed Jacob to always find others he could share the joy of volunteering at LaAmistad. However, 2020 brought along a unique set of challenges that brought new stressors to how LaAmistad would accomplish its mission of empowering and enriching the lives of Latino students and families. For Jacob, that meant he and his guest volunteers moved to an online environment to assist students in their education. Through this change in direction, Jacob continued to persevere and was still able to invite his peers to join him. “My biggest strength was developing communication skills. Meeting people where they are, and learning the depths of their story has been incredibly fulfilling.” Jacob said. Hearing about his student Ysidro, his family, and his pursuit of boxing was a joy for him. “I’d always been interested in Spanish and the culture, I love volunteering with LaAmistad.” LaAmistad Volunteers like Jacob Fleming are the backbone of the success of LaAmistad. We could not be where we are today without the folks like him that selflessly give and help our students achieve their greatest potential. Our volunteers have perseverance.
