Estrellitas

"Working for the academic and social success of young Latinas in Atlanta, Georgia"

All Atlanta area Latina teens are eligible to participate!

Estrellitas Mission

To empower Latina teens in the Atlanta community by developing and nurturing their leadership, intellectual, and cultural potential.

About Estrellitas

Estrellitas is a Junior League of Atlanta program for Latina teens grades 7-12 in the Atlanta area, striving to encourage these youths to stay in school, prepare them to succeed in the educational arena, develop their leadership skills, and to serve their community. The program is free.

History

The Junior League of Atlanta is a collective of over 4,000 diverse women with a focus on improving the health, education and welfare of women and children. The Junior League of Atlanta serves as a much-needed volunteer resource and as a catalyst for positive change through our partnerships with more than 65 nonprofit organizations in our community.

Early adolescence is a critical period of transition for all youth, marked by biological and social changes, experimentation, risk-taking, and increased independence. In an effort to support and empower Atlanta’s Latina girls during this period, the Junior League of Atlanta has developed an educational program which encourages Latina girls to develop their leadership skills and improve their self-esteem while building an identity firmly grounded in an understanding of their cultural heritage.

Estrellitas was established by the Junior League of Atlanta in the fall of 2007 after the JLA Community Needs Assessment Committee (CNAC) identified a lack of programs in the Atlanta community available to address the high numbers of Latina teen pregnancies and high school dropout rates. In 2013 the program merged with LaAmistad, Inc. Estrellitas is now a LaAmistad program sponsored by the Junior League of Atlanta.

Programming Topics

Programming topics include peer pressure, self-esteem, health education, education and career planning, financial management, gang prevention, and leadership development. Estrellitas also encourages strong mother/daughter relationships and provides events throughout the year where family can bond and strengthen their relationship.

Volunteers & Speakers

The Estrellitas program is managed by female, adult volunteers, provided by The Junior League of Atlanta and LaAmistad staff. These volunteers are led by 2 co-chairs who work with the other volunteers to coordinate various speakers, activities, and provide a girl-friendly forum to educate the Latina teens. We welcome additional volunteers.

In addition, do you have a great program suggestion for a Saturday morning session or know an expert speaker? Maybe another program who we can partner with? If you are interested in volunteering, sharing an idea or have a question, please email LaAmistad, Inc. at info@laamistadinc.org.
